Before you begin to read, it is very helpful to preview your reading to get a general idea of  the topic and how the reading is organized. Previewing a reading makes your reading easier and your comprehension better.

Previewing gives you a better idea about what you are going to read, helps you understand the topic and gives the organization of the reading.

Previewing includes doing the following:

1. Read the title and headings to help you see what is coming and how material/reading is organized.

2. Read the first and last paragraph of the reading.

3. Read the first sentence of all the other paragraphs.

4. Study any pictures, charts, graphs, and tables and read their captions.

5. Look at any review or comprehension questions you will need to answer. Looking at these questions will tell you the purpose of your reading.
