اس سورت میں خدا کی ذات کی وحدانیت اور اس کی طرف ہمارے وجود کی تمام ضروریات میں ہمارا رجوع اور یہ کہ اس کی ذات اور صفات اور افعال میں کوئی شریک نہیں ہے ، اور یہ قرآنی توحید، صرف قرآن ہی کے لیے مخصوص ہے، اور اسلام کی تمام بنیادی تعلیمات (اصولی، فروغی اور اخلاقی) کی اسی کے مطابق منصوبہ بندی کی گئی ہے۔ ہوسکتا ہے کہ یہ سورت مکہ اور مدینہ دونوں میں نازل ہوئی ہو، لیکن جیسا کہ ہم نے اوپر ذکر کیا ہے، اس کے سبب نزول میں جو روایات آئی ہیں ان سے معلوم ہوتا ہے کہ سورہ اخلاص مکہ میں نازل ہوئی ہے۔
